Modular Compost Heap & Seed Station

Made and positioned another section to my modular compost heap. Here I have positioned it off kilter to enable you to see how it just slides into position. Once it is full of compost it wont be able to move. When I want to dig out the compost or move the whole thing even, I can simply lift off each section and re-site it.

Most of my early sowing are indoors on windowsills so I bought this plastic covered shelf type greenhouse for our porch. At the base there is a very small electric heater which keeps the temps at around 15 degrees C overnight. The cover zips up to make a complete envelope.

Spring is here - almost!

At last we have a thaw with daytime temps around 7 degrees and some sun. I tried to weed one of the square foot raised beds but gave up as the compost was still frozed solid.

I bought a small 8 foot by 6 foot aluminium greenhouse but the place I wanted to put it was occupied by two compost heaps. What to do? I have been thinking for some time about adopting the 3 compost bin system but the ones I have seen on the net, it seemed to me, wouldn't allow me to move it should I find I have sited it somewhere where I wanted it moved again. My solution was borrowed from the way warre bee hives are made. Just simple square boxes sat on top of each other. I wanted a large compost pile so I made the internal dimensions 1m square. I used the same decking wood as I used for the saw horse(see earlier post).

I can add more sections as the pile grows.
